Spring Offering: After School Sailing – Try Out Sailing

Course Description

This 2 day, 2-hour course is designed for teens (age 13-19) who are eager for an introduction to the exciting activity of sailing in a fun environment.

Think of these sessions as an opportunity to try-out sailing. This is find out if you really like sailing and want to learn to sail in a more structured fashion though our Summer Program – exclusively for children of the Sail Club.

Our program is distinguished by the use of small high performance keelboats. It is more suitable.

Course topics include:

  • Fundamental sailing terms
  • Practice fundamental knots
  • Being part of the crew
  • Rigging the boat
  • Finding the wind direction
  • Setting sails
  • Sail trim for various points of sail
  • Preparing and returning to a dock
  • De-rigging and cleaning up the boat

Instructional Time:  2 day for 2-hour on and off the water

Boat Type: Newly designed professionally maintained J/80 keelboats

Pre-requisites:  Ability to swim is required. No prior sailing experience required, high interest in learning to how sail. Experienced sailors will be re-acquainted with familiar sailing concepts and apply them on a larger keelboat

Ages: 13 to 19.

Waivers: Parents/Guardians are required to sign a waiver of liability for each participant.

Instructors: Our instructors are highly experienced sailors, club members or instructors some with a combination of one or more credentials from the US Coast Guard, US Sailing, American Sailing Association, or RYA.

Boats: The J/80, a 26 foot – higher performance keelboat that is also used for adult sailing class and ONE15 Brooklyn Sail Club member sailing including racing & cruising. Our fleet of boats are the newest, professionally maintained boats in New York Harbor used for teen sailing.

Sailing Area: Our classes are held in the Upper Bay of New York harbor, which is an exciting body of water to be introduced to sailing. Our instructors ensure students are safe at all times while we learn in this spectacular arena.

Weather Conditions: We take the safety of our students seriously and will adjust our curriculum to ensure students are only sailing in safe weather conditions.

Early Drop-Off and Late Pick-Up of Students: No supervision of students who arrive early or are picked up after scheduled class sessions times is provided by the Sailing School.

What Students Need to Bring: Non marking closed toe shoes, gloves, warm hat, wind and water repellent jacket and pants, and layered warm clothing. For safety reasons students cannot wear jewelry during class. Due to the nature of this sporting activity, we cannot be held responsible for any loss or damage to any property brought onto any ONE15 Brooklyn Marina facility or vessel.

Price: $225 p.p.

Introductory Price: $100 p.p. per week (Monday and Tuesday)
